Elizabeth Fry: A Woman Who Respected Criminals

Elizabeth Fry was born in England on May 21, 1780.  She enjoyed dressing fancy and having fun.  She always grumbled at the Quaker meetings that her family went to. She did not know God yet.  But when she was eighteen, she heard a sermon at church that completely changed her.  After she became a Christian, God called her to minister to women prisoners and to poor people.  She  gave them clothes, food, and skills for making a living when they got out of jail.  She highly respected the prisoners and didn't think they should be treated like animals.  She enjoyed spending time with them.  Elizabeth always went to the prisons to give the prisoners company, love, encouragement, and most of all Christ.  She made a huge difference in their lives.  She also served homeless and sick people. She took care of people who couldn't take care of themselves.
Once, some of the prisoners that she took care of were exiled to Botany Bay, Australia.  She sent some things that they could use: a change of clothing, a spoon and a knife, some reading glasses, and a bible.  She was sad to see them go, but she knew God's love would follow them forever.

When Elizabeth  Fry met her father in heaven, it was 1845, at the age of 65.  She had blessed many people.
There is an Elizabeth Fry Society that sets up and runs homeless shelters for women.  She fed the poor and loved the law-breakers.  She was a wonderful woman.  She made a difference and you can too!

(CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK)
This week make a difference in someone's life that can't take care of themselves. Someone that is sick, homeless, or too poor to buy food for their family.  You can help by donating cans, clothes, or even opening up your house to them.  If you can't afford to donate something, your time and words can really encourage them!
